Why Does Well Water Cause Orange Stains?
Those orange, rust-colored stains on your sinks, toilets, tubs, and laundry are caused by iron in your well water. Florida's groundwater naturally contains dissolved iron that leaches from iron-rich rock and soil. When iron-laden water contacts air or surfaces, it oxidizes — turning orange or reddish-brown and leaving stubborn stains.
Even small amounts of iron — as little as 0.3 mg/L — can cause visible staining. Many Citrus County wells test at 1–5 mg/L or higher.
Types of Iron in Well Water
- Ferrous iron (dissolved) — water looks clear but stains when it hits air
- Ferric iron (particulate) — water looks orange or brown
- Iron bacteria — slimy, reddish-brown buildup in toilet tanks and pipes
