Florida's geology creates unique water quality challenges. Here are the most common contaminants found in Citrus County well water.
Hardness (Calcium and Magnesium)
The most widespread water quality issue in Citrus County. Florida's limestone geology dissolves into groundwater, creating extremely hard water — typically 15–30+ GPG in this area. Hard water causes scale buildup, appliance damage, and dry skin.
Iron
Iron is the second most common problem in Citrus County well water. It causes orange staining on fixtures, laundry, and driveways, and gives water a metallic taste. Iron levels of 1–10+ mg/L are common in this area.
Hydrogen Sulfide (Sulfur)
The rotten egg smell that many Citrus County residents notice comes from hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in groundwater. Even at low concentrations (0.1 mg/L), the odor is noticeable and unpleasant.
Bacteria
Coliform bacteria can enter well water through surface water infiltration, cracked well casings, or contaminated equipment. Annual testing for bacteria is essential for all private well owners.
Nitrates
