How Does a Water Softener Work?

A water softener removes hardness minerals from your water through a process called ion exchange. Here's how it works.

The Ion Exchange Process

A water softener contains a tank filled with resin beads — tiny plastic beads coated with sodium ions. As hard water flows through the resin tank, calcium and magnesium ions (the hardness minerals) are attracted to the resin beads and swap places with the sodium ions. The result: soft water flows out of the tank, free of hardness minerals.

The Brine Tank

The brine tank holds salt (sodium chloride or potassium chloride). This is the salt you add to your softener. The brine tank is separate from the resin tank.

Regeneration

Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium and can no longer soften water. The softener automatically regenerates — it flushes the resin beads with a strong salt solution (brine) from the brine tank. The brine washes the calcium and magnesium off the resin beads and down the drain, and recharges the beads with sodium ions. The softener is then ready to soften water again.

How Often Does It Regenerate?

Modern demand-initiated softeners regenerate based on actual water usage, not a timer. This is more efficient — the softener only regenerates when needed. In Citrus County's very hard water, most households regenerate every 3–7 days.

Does Softened Water Taste Salty?

No. The amount of sodium added to softened water is very small — typically 20–40 mg/L for moderately hard water. For comparison, a slice of bread contains about 170 mg of sodium. Most people cannot taste the difference. If you're on a sodium-restricted diet, a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap removes virtually all sodium from drinking water.
