Water Softener Maintenance Schedule
A water softener requires minimal maintenance — but the right schedule keeps it running efficiently for years. Here's what to do and when.
Monthly: Check Salt Level
Open the brine tank and check the salt level. The tank should be at least one-quarter full at all times. In Citrus County's very hard water, most households need to add salt every 4–8 weeks. Use high-quality pellet or crystal salt — avoid rock salt, which leaves more residue.
Every 3–6 Months: Check for Salt Bridges
A salt bridge is a hard crust that forms in the brine tank, creating a gap between the salt and the water. The softener appears to have salt but isn't actually using it. Use a broom handle to gently break up any crust you find.
Annually: Professional Service
An annual professional service visit should include:
- Brine tank cleaning — remove salt mushing and sediment buildup
- Resin bed inspection and cleaning (iron fouling is common in Citrus County)
- Control valve inspection and adjustment
- Water test to verify the softener is working correctly
- Regeneration cycle check and adjustment
Every 5–10 Years: Resin Replacement
The resin beads in a water softener typically last 10–15 years, but in Citrus County's high-iron water, they may need cleaning or replacement sooner. Signs of resin failure include hard water returning despite the softener running normally.
