When to Replace Your Water Filter
Water filters don't last forever. Here's the replacement schedule for every type of filter — and the signs that it's time to change.
Whole-House Sediment Filter
Replace every 3–6 months (more often in Citrus County's high-iron, high-sediment well water). Signs it needs replacement: reduced water pressure, visible discoloration returning to water.
Whole-House Carbon Filter
Replace every 6–12 months. Signs: chlorine taste or odor returning, musty smell from water. Carbon filters have a finite capacity to adsorb contaminants — once saturated, they stop working.
Under-Sink Carbon Filter Cartridge
Replace every 6 months. Signs: taste or odor returning to filtered water, reduced flow from the filtered faucet.
Reverse Osmosis Pre-Filters
Replace every 6–12 months. Pre-filters protect the expensive RO membrane — neglecting them shortens membrane life significantly.
RO Membrane
Replace every 2–5 years depending on water quality. In Citrus County's high-TDS, high-iron water, membranes may need replacement sooner. Signs: TDS reading of filtered water rising, reduced production rate.
RO Post-Filter (Polishing Carbon)
Replace every 12 months. This final stage ensures the best possible taste — don't skip it.
Iron Filter Media (Greensand, Birm, Air Injection)
Inspect annually, replace every 5–10 years. Iron filter media loses effectiveness over time. Annual service checks media condition and performance.
